The World’s Economy Has Already Shifted Into The Virtual Space More And Faster Than Ever Before & It’s Time To Catch Up Right Now… Or Else You’ll Risk Getting Left Behind.

how to create an online course

1. Who are you?

My name is Megan Griffith and I’m a mental wellness coach and small business owner. I help women improve their mental health through validation, action, and community.

2. What’s your course all about?

My Anxiety-Proof Mornings eCourse is all about creating a morning routine that actually makes you feel good and productive rather than anxious and overwhelmed.

3. What makes you an expert in this field?

I’m a mental health writer with lots of lived experience with anxiety, especially around establishing and sticking to routines. I used my personal experience combined with my professional experience to create this course.

4. What is the transformation your course offers to the students?

If you put in the work, this course can change your mornings from hectic and overwhelming to intentional and calm.

5. Which market does your online course serve and how did you get into it?

My course serves the mental health niche, which I got into because of my own mental health issues. When I was searching for help with my own mental health, I noticed the information I was looking for wasn’t really out there, so I started creating it myself.

6. Why is it important to you to serve this market?

This market is incredibly important to me because I know how miserable it feels to struggle with your mental health and feel like you’re all alone, or like something is wrong with who you are. I am here to help women in the same position realize that they are exactly who they’re meant to be, and they aren’t alone.

7. Describe the moment when you decided to create your own course. Where were you, what happened and why did you decide to do it?

I was doing my morning routine a few months ago, and I suddenly realized how much calmer I felt compared to how I used to feel before I had a consistent morning routine. Then it hit me that I could help others create a routine that improved their lives as well. I decided to jump on the idea because I knew there were women out there struggling with their morning routine and I realized I could help.

8. How did you overcome doubtful moments during your course creation journey?

There were definitely times I doubted myself while creating the Anxiety-Proof Mornings eCourse. But I got through it by reminding myself why I was doing this: people need this course, people will absolutely benefit from this course, and it was my job to bring it to them.

9. What are some of your tricks to deal with imposter syndrome?

When I start to feel like an imposter, I place my hand over my heart, close my eyes, and take several deep breaths. Then, out loud, I tell myself that I am capable of helping others and therefore I have a duty to help others. I am not an imposter, I am a helper, doing my job.

10. How long did it take you to create your course?

It took me two weeks to create my course, but during those two weeks, I worked a lot of hours to get it done.

11. How did your first launch go?

My first launch wasn’t ideal. I got one sale, which I was thrilled about, but I was obviously hoping for more. It took a lot of hard work not to tell myself negative stories about failure. Part of me felt like because the initial launch failed, I was a failure.

Now I see that isn’t true at all. It just means some aspects of my launch weren’t optimal for sales. All I have to do now find out which parts went wrong and change them.

12. How do you structure your launches in general now?

In the past, I structured my launches around email marketing, but now I’m using blog posts and social media posts to gain more traffic and excitement about my courses, coaching, and other products.

13. Where does your traffic come from?

The vast majority of my traffic comes from social media, which is why I’m giving it more attention in future launches, but I also get a decent amount of traffic from organic searches.

14. Which content do you like producing the most?

I think my favorite content to produce is blog posts. I’m a writer at heart and I feel that I express myself best through writing. When I write, I imagine I’m writing directly to one reader and I think because of that, my writing really reaches people and feels personal.

15. What online course platform are you using?

I use the free version of Thinkific.

16. What is amazing about this platform?

I love Thinkific because you can include content in all kinds of formats, from text to video to PDF, and you can create and sell three different courses with the free version.

17. Which features do you wish this platform would have?

I honestly think that Thinkific has nearly every tool I could want.

18. Why did you choose this platform over other platforms?

That being said, I chose Thinkific because their free version offered the most features compared to other platforms.

19. Which other tools do you use to keep your online business running?

I use Canva Pro for designing everything from logos to pins, I use the Genius Bloggers Toolkit for my own business education, and I use Acuity to schedule coaching appointments.

20. How many students have you served so far?

I have served 25 students so far with my courses and coaching.

21. How much revenue have you created during your first launch, and ongoing?

I made $25 during my initial launch of the Anxiety-Proof Mornings eCourse when I sold one course, but overall, I have made over $400 from my coaching and courses.

22. What are you running costs to keep the online course business going?

To keep my business going, I pay for Canva Pro, Acuity Scheduling, domain rights and hosting for my website, and I pay for a mastermind coaching group to help me stay motivated.

23. What are some of the biggest mistakes you made along the way?

My biggest mistake with my initial launch of the Anxiety-Proof Mornings eCourse was relying almost entirely on email to make my sales when very little of my traffic actually comes from email. I also think it was a mistake not to include testimonials on my sales page. These are things I’ll be changing next time I launch a product.

24. How has your business changed since implementing an online course into the business model?

I’ve been selling courses pretty much since the beginning of my business, and I’ve noticed that selling my own courses makes me incredibly happy. Right now, my sales are still fairly low, but I know it will pick up because I’m really passionate about sharing my information with people in an easily digestible format.

25. How has your personal life changed?

Honestly, my personal life has gotten a lot more chaotic since I started my business and started creating courses. I put a lot of time and love into my products, so I don’t always have time to do the things I’d like to do in my personal life, like spend more time with my family or practice my hobbies.

26. What’s the greatest transformational story you can tell about one (or more) of your students?

One of my coaching clients has only worked with me twice, and we’ve already made huge breakthroughs in terms of quieting her inner critic. Instead of fighting it, resisting it, or yelling at it, we’ve used gentle validation to soothe that inner critic.

Already, she is finding tools like EFT tapping that can help her calm down when her inner critic is driving her toward a meltdown. She has said that despite years of therapy, she’s never known how to combat the inner critic without making it louder, and we’ve already made great progress on that in just two sessions.

27. If you could use a time machine and send yourself back to the time before you started out, what advice would you give yourself, knowing what you know now?

I would tell myself to find joy in my work. I think when I started my business, I thought that success would make me happy, but now that I’m becoming more successful, I’m realizing that isn’t the case. It’s actually the other way around. Success doesn’t bring joy, joy brings success.

28. What is your million dollar piece of advice to those who are just getting started in their online course journey OR for those who are looking to scale?

Don’t try to do it “right.” When it comes to running a small business, it’s always better to work with your brain and do things the way you would do them rather than doing them the way you think you’re supposed to.
