how to create an online course

1. Who are you?

I am Damon “DaRil Nailer the “Renaissance Man” and “Multifaceted Entrepreneur” who wears the hats of author, educator, speaker, consultant, and music producer.

2. What’s your course all about?

Branding, Building, & Balling provides actionable strategies and tips regarding building a brand, leveraging your platform, establishing your team, articulating your vision, expanding your network, and developing personally.

3. What makes you an expert in this field?

I possess a wealth of knowledge and experience as an entrepreneur and business owner.  I’ve created and established businesses/innovations, so I am aware of the procedures and facets that are involved in the process.

4. What is the transformation your course offers to the students?

The transformation BBB offers is the shifting of students’ perspective concerning the alignment of their image, identity, business, brand, and network.

5. Which market does your online course serve and how did you get into it?

Business/Entrepreneurship and Leadership.

6. Why is it important to you to serve this market?

Many entrepreneurs are not familiar with the various components that go into forming and building a sustainable brand.  Also, there is a need to enlighten individuals in authority about leadership principles and characteristics.

7. Describe the moment when you decided to create your own course. Where were you, what happened and why did you decide to do it?

After publishing my book- Living, Loving, Leading, the revelatory light bulb went off as I was pondering ways to translate some of the concepts into something beneficial, specifically for entrepreneurs and business owners. It was at that moment when I began to extract from my book some of the content from topics/areas I know are relevant for entrepreneurs and devise my course.

8. How did you overcome doubtful moments during your course creation journey?

I remind myself of the demand for my book and the positive comments/reviews of it.  With those things in mind, I leverage them to build my confidence and faith to believe the course will succeed as well.

9. What are some of your tricks to deal with imposter syndrome?

Possess humility– This enables me to give myself sufficient grace and space to make mistakes, knowing I don’t have all the answers.

Remain a constant student– As a constant student, you are always learning.  Even though I’m considered an expert in various areas, I’m always open to new ideas and looking to learn more about the concepts I’m already knowledgeable of.

Maximize the development of your skills– We should always challenge ourselves to be great at what we do.  As we constantly utilize our talents, we will become more proficient and adept.  Competency significantly minimizes the imposter syndrome.  It’s all about arriving at a place of being extremely confident and competent in our abilities.

10. How long did it take you to create your course?

It took about 6 months.  Initially, I had half of the information and modules.  The last few moments, I drafted the other half of the modules based on some trainings and workshops I conducted.  It was during these sessions that I realized how the concepts fit with the Branding, Building, & Balling course.

11. How did your first launch go?

It went extremely well. I had tested the content/information at a few workshops I conducted.  So, when it launched, it was already proven, and it was well received.

12. How do you structure your launches in general now?

Several of them followed the release of a book that aligns with them, and a few others were released as stand-alone courses. When released following a book, it gives those who purchase the book additional, in-depth information and questions that won’t be found in it.

13. Where does your traffic come from?

Most of my traffic comes from social media, my publication features/interviews, and an informational site called Quora.

14. Which content do you like producing the most?

Personal development, entrepreneurship, leadership, self-help, relationships, and spirituality.

15. What online course platform are you using?

Thinkific.

16. What is amazing about this platform?

It has a very user-friendly interface, many options, affordable plans, and you don’t have to record videos to include with your courses.

17. Which features do you wish this platform would have?

It has all the features I need.  For me, there isn’t anything that it is lacking.

18. Why did you choose this platform over other platforms?

The fact that you didn’t have to record videos is what sold me.

19. Which other tools do you use to keep your online business running?

I constantly promote my content on social media platforms through posts/ads, emails, workshops, publication features, interviews, and on my YouTube shows. Also, I have sales during different times of the year to attract more customers.

20. How many students have you served so far?

66

21. How much revenue have you created during your first launch, and ongoing?

$3000 on the first launch and $5000 in total.

22. What are you running costs to keep the online course business going?

$50-75 per month.

23. What are some of the biggest mistakes you made along the way?

  1. I definitely should have recruited individuals to help me market/promote my courses and receive commission off of the sales.
  2. Passive promotion– I was aggressive at first, but I slacked off a bit as time progressed.
  3. Offering the course at a discounted price initially– Looking back at my experience, I should have launched with a cheaper price and then gradually increased it.

24. How has your business changed since implementing an online course into the business model?

It has given me more credibility and more opportunities because it further establishes me as an expert.  Another stream of income has been created through the course.

25. How has your personal life changed?

I am definitely happier and fulfilled, knowing that people are willing to enroll in my courses, attend my workshops, and request my presentations of the course content.  I’m ecstatic about being able to serve as the owner of my own online school.  All in all, my life has transformed for the better.

26. What’s the greatest transformational story you can tell about one (or more) of your students?

Below are 2 incredible quotes from 2 of my students concerning my G3 Journey Course.  The proof of its effectiveness lies in their comments.

“Damon, man these modules are quite impressive, powerful, and professional. I am amazed and enlightened. They are full of revelatory nuggets. The revelation is rich, deep, and heavy but easy to mentally digest.”  Larry Bell

“Damon, these modules are exceptional! Written with just the right balance of application, information and revelation, the content is life changing. I especially like how the modules are organized. They create a clear path from discovery to development and leads to attainable and measurable success. I have learned so much through these insightful modules. This was a priceless investment into my personal growth.” David Carte

27. If you could use a time machine and send yourself back to the time before you started out, what advice would you give yourself, knowing what you know now?

Stay the course.  Your ideas, content, and concepts are worth more than you can imagine.  Remain persistent and you will experience great success.

28. What is your million dollar piece of advice to those who are just getting started in their online course journey OR for those who are looking to scale?

Create courses that showcase your expertise, experience, and passion.  This will make it easy to market, promote, and sell because they will emanate from your soul and core values. In addition, you will be comfortable in describing and explaining them when given opportunities.
